“Digital arrest”

A video call from “police” or “CBI” says you are under arrest and must pay to clear your name.

What it looks like

+92 3xx xxx xx41 (video call)

This is Mumbai Cyber Crime. A parcel with drugs and 5 passports was booked on your Aadhaar. You are under digital arrest. Do not disconnect or tell anyone. Transfer your savings to the RBI verification account to prove they are clean.

How it works

  1. A call claims a parcel, SIM card or bank account in your name was used for a crime.
  2. You are moved to a video call with people in uniform, a fake police station or court in the background.
  3. They forbid you from hanging up or telling family, sometimes for hours or days.
  4. You are told to move your money to a “safe” or “verification” account. It never comes back.

Red flags

  • There is no such thing as a “digital arrest” in Indian law.
  • Police, CBI, ED, customs and courts never arrest or question anyone over a video call.
  • No agency asks you to transfer money to “verify” it.
  • Threats, secrecy and staying on the call are the scam.

What to do

  • Hang up. You are not under arrest.
  • Tell a family member straight away.
  • If you paid, call 1930 at once and report it on cybercrime.gov.in.
  • Report the number on Chakshu (Sanchar Saathi).
