Example made up by us. Numbers and links removed.

How it works

  1. The link opens a page that looks exactly like your bank.
  2. You type your customer ID, password and card details, then an OTP.
  3. With the OTP they log in, add themselves as a payee and empty the account.

Red flags

  • Banks don’t send KYC links by SMS or WhatsApp.
  • Urgency: “today”, “within 24 hours”, “last warning”.
  • Short links or web addresses that aren’t your bank’s exact site.
  • Any page that asks for an OTP you didn’t start.

What to do

  • Don’t click. Open your bank’s own app or visit the branch.
  • Never share an OTP, PIN, CVV or password, even with “bank staff”.
  • If you entered details, call your bank to block the account and card, then 1930.
  • Report the SMS on Chakshu.
