Electricity bill “disconnection”

A message says your power will be cut tonight because the last bill wasn’t updated, and gives an “officer’s” number.

What it looks like

+91 98xxx xxx12

Dear Consumer, your electricity power will be disconnected tonight at 9:30 pm because your previous month bill was not updated. Please immediately contact our electricity officer 98xxxxxx12.

SCAM
Example made up by us. Numbers and links removed.

How it works

  1. The “officer” asks you to install a support app or open a link to pay a small amount.
  2. The app lets them see your screen, or the page captures your card and OTP.
  3. Much larger amounts are then taken from your account.

Red flags

  • Power companies send notices from official sender IDs, not personal mobile numbers.
  • A deadline of “tonight” and a number to call.
  • Requests to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer or any “support” app.

What to do

  • Check your bill only on your power company’s official app or website.
  • Don’t call the number or install anything.
  • If you paid or shared details, call your bank and 1930.
  • Report the message on Chakshu.
